Known medically as varices, varicose veins are dilated, often twisted veins that become visible primarily on the legs.

For many people, they begin quite inconspicuously: fine spider veins, slightly raised vessels or small changes beneath the skin. Over time, these can develop into clearly visible, bluish-shimmering or knotted veins that run along the legs and alter the appearance of the skin.

But varicose veins are not just a cosmetic concern. Many of those affected report that their legs feel different – heavy, tired or tense. Especially towards the evening, the feeling can arise that the legs are "under pressure". Shoes suddenly feel tighter, ankles appear swollen and the skin may react more sensitively.

Symptoms such as a pulling or pressure sensation, tingling, calf cramps or an inner feeling of restlessness in the legs are also not uncommon. Some describe that their legs only feel lighter when elevated or when they are moving. 

Varicose veins as a sign of impaired circulation 
– what happens inside the body

Varicose veins do not develop in isolation – they are part of a larger context within the body.

Our circulatory system comprises around 60,000 kilometres of blood vessels that work every day to ensure that every cell is supplied with oxygen and nutrients – while at the same time transporting metabolic waste products away. The venous system in particular plays a decisive role: it carries the "used" blood back to the heart so that circulation remains in balance. 

Small venous valves help with this; they function like one-way valves and prevent blood from flowing back down. When these valves no longer work optimally or the vein walls lose stability, blood can pool in the veins. The vessels dilate and become visible.

In many cases these changes are harmless and represent primarily an aesthetic issue. In some situations, however, they may require medical attention. After all, every varicose vein is more than just a visible change – it indicates that normal blood flow in the venous system is disrupted. Varicose veins are therefore a sign of impaired circulation.

Why varicose veins develop in the first place
– from cause to visible change

Varicose veins usually do not appear suddenly, but develop over a longer period – often gradually and unnoticed.

The starting point is often a disruption of venous return. Blood can no longer be transported optimally from the legs back to the heart. The causes can be varied: prolonged sitting or standing, lack of movement, increased pressure in the abdomen (e.g. during pregnancy), hormonal influences or a weakening of the vein walls.

If the venous valves and the muscle pump no longer work optimally, blood begins to pool in the leg veins. The pressure in the vessels rises, the veins dilate – the first visible changes appear.

Over time, further changes may appear:

  • Fluid escapes into the tissue, leading to swelling (oedema), and the tissue comes under increasing pressure. At the same time, tension in the muscles can further constrict the vessels and make venous return even more difficult.

  • Microcirculation in the tissue is also increasingly impaired. The finest vessels can no longer optimally supply the surrounding tissue, and metabolic waste products are removed less efficiently. As a result, the tissue may regenerate less effectively.

  • As a consequence, skin changes may occur: the skin appears more sensitive, may discolour, become drier or lose elasticity. In advanced stages, hardening or poorly healing skin areas may also develop.

  • Added to this are often inflammatory processes, which further weaken the vein walls and venous valves. As a result, blood flow deteriorates further.

This creates a vicious cycle: disrupted return leads to pressure, swelling, restricted microcirculation and inflammation – and these factors in turn intensify the disruption. 

Over time, the veins become more and more visible, and typical symptoms such as heavy legs, a feeling of tension or pain may increase.

Who is particularly often affected
– and which factors play a role

Varicose veins rarely develop from a single cause alone.

Usually several factors work together. The most important risk factors include: 

  • Genetic predisposition 
  • Older age 
  • Pregnancies 
  • Excess weight 
  • Prolonged sitting or standing 
  • Lack of movement 

Everyday life also plays a role. People who stand or sit a lot at work place greater strain on their venous system. At the same time, tissue loses elasticity with age, which means veins can give way more easily.

What you can do yourself for your veins 
– proven measures for everyday life

Sooner or later, many people ask themselves the question: what can I do myself to support my veins?

There are a number of proven measures that may promote venous return. Regular movement – such as walking, cycling or swimming – activates the muscle pump and helps to transport blood from the legs back to the heart. Dynamic movements in which the leg muscles are repeatedly tensed and relaxed can be particularly helpful.

Elevating the legs can also make return easier, since gravity provides support in this case. It is equally important to avoid prolonged sitting or standing as far as possible or to interrupt it regularly. Even small movements in everyday life – such as rotating the feet or briefly standing up – may make a difference.

In addition, many people find cool applications or contrast showers on the legs pleasant, as they may stimulate the vessels and reduce the feeling of heavy legs. Wearing comfortable clothing and avoiding strongly constricting materials may also contribute to not unnecessarily impeding blood flow.

Particularly striking: in a dark-field examination, we were able to observe clear changes in the blood picture.

How this works in everyday life
– the technology behind the BioRelax system

Observational study: BioRelax Pads for varicose veins

We investigated the effects of the BioRelax Pads on various manifestations of varicose veins.

For this, 38 participants with varicose veins used the BioRelax Pads according to instructions over a period of 12-16 weeks. Each used 3-5 pads, depending on the size of the affected areas. During this period, the participants documented tangible and visible changes to their varicose veins.

Background information:
circulation as a central factor for healthy tissue

Well-functioning circulation is a fundamental prerequisite for tissue throughout the body to be optimally supplied.

Blood transports oxygen and nutrients to the cells, while at the same time carrying metabolic waste products away. This exchange takes place not in the large vessels, but above all in the smallest vessels – the capillaries. 

It is important to understand: circulation always concerns the entire vascular system – both the arteries, which carry oxygen-rich blood to the tissue, and the veins, which transport it back to the heart.

In connection with circulation, the so-called rouleaux formation of red blood cells is also frequently discussed. This is a phenomenon in which red blood cells can stack together under certain conditions.

It is assumed that such changes may influence the flow properties of the blood – particularly in the area of the smallest vessels. In this context, it is also discussed whether restricted blood flow could impair the supply to the tissue and thus, in the long term, may favour processes associated with venous insufficiency, varicose veins or spider veins.

Independent of individual explanatory models, however, one thing emerges again and again: good circulation in the tissue is an important prerequisite for functioning supply and regulation within the tissue.
